Partial building collapse near Miami

Police blocked nearby roads, and scores of fire and rescue vehicles, ambulances and police cars swarmed the area.

Footage of firefighters pulling one boy from the rubble alive was aired by NBC 6 South Florida.

Authorities had no word yet on casualties or details of how many people lived in the building.

CBS News reported that at least one person is dead and people are being extracted from the collapse.

Search and rescue efforts continue after a condo tower partially collapsed overnight in the town of Surfside, Fla., just north of Miami Beach.

Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, about 8 miles northwest of Surfside, has received three patients from the scene so far. Two were in critical condition. The building was undergoing roof work, the mayor said.

The 12-story building was built in 1981 and has more than 130 units, records showed. Marian Cruz of the Surfside Police Department. About 80 rescue units responded to the scene.

"We are so grateful to @MiamiDadeFire, @MiamiBeachFire and all the first responders on the scene - may they stay safe while working to save lives".

The department has not yet said what may have caused the collapse near 88th St and Collins Ave. The Miami-Dade Police Department said it is investigating the incident.
