A driver slammed into spectators Saturday evening at the start of a U.S. pride parade in South Florida, killing one man and seriously injuring another, authorities said. Officials said the other man was expected to survive.

Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantolis spoke with local TV station WPLG about the incident.

Police have not yet said if the crash was intentional.

He allegedly told police "that his foot became stuck between the gas pedal and the brake causing him to lose control of the vehicle", CBS 4 reported. "This was not an attack on the LGBTQ community", Knight said in the statement according to the Associated Press.

"This white pickup up truck dashed right through the crowd, barely missing Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz's auto by inches, and just dashed, cut through, smashed through a gate, smashed into a landscaping company, and he hit two people", Trantolis said.

Meanwhile, Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried was also at the parade, and sent out a message to her followers after the tragedy. She tweeted Saturday night, "I am deeply shaken and devastated that a life was lost".

Some reports online indicate the driver of the truck was wearing a Fort Lauderdale Gay Men's Chorus shirt at the time.
