Alberta is not the first jurisdiction to unveil incentives to make residents roll up their sleeves for a vaccine shot.

The first draw for the first main prize will be held on the day that the province enters Stage 3 of the reopening plan. More registration details will be revealed this week, and the window for taking part will remain open for one week after the province reaches the 70% mark of individuals that have received at least one dose of the vaccination.

"When we hit that 70 per cent number, that's when we'll be fully open", said Kenney.

The "Open for Summer Lottery" is being implemented to encourage more Albertans to get vaccinated.

"The arrival and uptake of the COVID-19 vaccines in our province have accomplished extraordinary things", said Alberta's Minister of Health, Tyler Shandro.

Last week Timothy Caulfield, who is research chair in health law and policy at the University of Alberta stated that an incentive lotto program like this one might prove to be helpful for the vaccination process.

He acknowledges there are some who will never get a vaccine of any kind.

"We need to just nudge those who haven't gotten around to getting their vaccines yet", Kenney said in the video posted Saturday.

"This lottery is an investment in Albertans and our province's economic future".

But, just over 3,500 new first doses were administered on Sunday, the lowest since late February according to the latest provincial data. Currently, with 60,429 first-dose appointments booked over the next seven days, Alberta is projected to hit the target on Friday, .

Only one registration is needed to be qualified for all three draws.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney hopes the $3 million COVID-19 vaccine lottery will get the attention of those who are yet to get the first dose.

2nd draw at the end of August for Albertans fully vaccinated with two doses of vaccine which closes August 24.

As of Monday, June 14, around 69% of those 12 and older had received at least one dose of vaccine with over 729,000 people having two shots. Those whose names are selected must be able to provide proof that they've received their first dose to win the July draw, or their second dose to win the August and September draws.

Draws are also to be held and the victor announced August 31 and September 30 for people who are fully vaccinated.
