"Christian Eriksen is awake and is undergoing further examinations at Rigshospitalet", said a statement from Denmark.

Joel Pohjanpalo scored and Lukas Hradecky saved a penalty to give Finland a 1-0 victory over Denmark on Saturday in a European Championship game overshadowed by Christian Eriksen's collapse on the field.

However, Finland striker Joel Pohjanpalo popped up against the run of play to head the victor on the hour with his side's only attempt of the game before celebrating in a restrained fashion on the side of the field where Eriksen had collapsed.

The traumatic scenes would have been watched by millions around the world and there was an outpouring of support and prayers for the 29-year-old.

"The UEFA EURO 2020 match in Copenhagen has been suspended due to a medical emergency", it tweeted.

Sabrina Kvist Jensen, Christian Eriksen's girlfriend, is consoled by Denmark defender and captain Simon Kjaer as Eriksen receives medical treatment.

The Denmark midfielder received the ball and fell head over heels into the pitch, which instantly caused referee Anthony Taylor to signal for the medical team to come on.

When players returned to the field over an hour later to warm up, some Danish players appeared to still be struggling emotionally.

In the stadium, an incredible act of solidarity happened as the two sets of opposing supporters both chanted Eriksen's name out of respect for the playmaker. It resumed at 8:30 p.m. local time.
