In a message of thanks on the couple's Archewell website, they said: "On June 4, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili".

"For example, the two children of the Queen's youngest son, Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, are eligible to have the titles of His or Her Royal Highness but they are instead styled as the children of an Earl-Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn-rather than holding royal titles".

As grandchildren of the monarch through the male line, Prince Charles' sons Harry and William as well as Prince Andrew's daughters Beatrice and Eugenie were entitled to be known as prince or princess.

The baby's name is Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor after Harry's grandmother and mother.

Diana, the former wife of Prince Charles and mother to Harry and his elder brother William, died in a Paris auto crash in 1997.

Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born on Friday at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, with Harry in attendance.

Earlier, The Queen sent her best wishes in a joint statement with the Cambridges and the Prince of Wales who had made a touching tribute to her by naming their daughter "Lilibet", short for Elizabeth.

"Congratulations to Harry, Meghan and Archie on the arrival of baby Lilibet Diana", Harry's father, Prince Charles, and his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, shared on Twitter.

The birth follows a tumultuous year for the couple, who have stepped down from royal duties and moved to the United States to live more independent lives, but rarely been seen out of the public spotlight.

She is the Queen's 11th great-grandchild and is eighth in line to the throne.

With the royal family rapidly expanding at the turn of the century, King George V's Letters Patent restricted the His/Her Royal Highness titles to specific members only.

Prince William and Kate have joined other senior royals in congratulating Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on the "happy news" of their daughter's birth.

Meghan had previously disclosed that she suffered a miscarriage last summer in a moving opinion piece for the New York Times.

The Sussexes announced that their second child would be a girl in a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in March.

"Amazing. Just grateful", Harry said at the time, describing his own reaction. "To have any child, any one or any two, would have been fantastic, but to have a boy and then a girl, I mean, what more can you ask for?"
