Then, during the week of June 14, another 1.5 million doses will be delivered. Both vaccines have shown promise and are expected to reduce worldwide dependence for the supply of doses.

Anand had a call with company officials on Tuesday and had indicated at the time that Moderna meant to deliver "millions and millions of doses in the month of June". Brodie said last week that the figure is now likely closer to 40 million. So far, it has delivered just 5.6 million.

India has also been using two vaccines - Covishield by the Serum Institute of India (SII) and Covaxin by the Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech. The total number of doses given was 200,662,456, or over 20 crore, until 7am on Wednesday. Moderna has never shipped that many shots to Canada in a two-week period.

"The timely alignment and execution of the draft Heads of Terms will enable Pfizer to reserve the allocation of doses and pave the pathway for executing the Distribution and Supply Agreement", the company told the government while seeking fast-tracking the regulatory pathway to help it supply "Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine as expeditiously as possible to India". Four participants who did not receive the vaccine developed Covid-19 during the study.

The Ministry said that 20,06,62,456 doses including 15,71,49,593 first dose and 4,35,12,863 second dose of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered as per data available at 7.00 am on May 26, which is the 130th day of the vaccination drive.

While Canada was among the first countries to sign a procurement deal with Moderna, the company has had to cancel shipments or punt deliveries to later dates as it has struggled with production issues.

"The provision has now been further amended to waive the trial requirement altogether for the well-established vaccines manufactured in other countries", the government said in a statement.

The company, which has few facilities on its own, relies on third-party finish-and-fill companies to churn out its product and ship it overseas.
