Late on Tuesday evening the Department of Health Victoria issued text messages to supporters seated in the vicinity of the positive case classifying them as close contacts and advising them to get tested.

The Department of Health has identified more than 40 exposure sites across the city while thousands of AFL fans are on high alert after one of the cases linked to the northern Melbourne outbreak attended the MCG over the weekend.

Victoria had not recorded any locally-acquired coronavirus cases for about three months before the latest cases, which are believed to be linked to a traveller who returned from overseas and became infected while in hotel quarantine.

"This is subject to how we go over the next 24 hours".

"Only four reasons to leave the home for players: That's obviously goods and services. care and compassionate reasons, exercise and other essential reasons such as petrol station, post offices, vets, etcetera", SEN reporter Sam Edmund told Dwayne's World on Wednesday.

The AFL on Tuesday paused ticket sales for games in round 11 and 12, with the Victorian government yet to make a decision on crowd sizes.

The outbreak ends Victoria's run of zero cases for almost three months and prompted New Zealand to suspend quarantine-free travel with the state for 72 hours from Tuesday evening, while the neighbouring state of South Australia has imposed travel restrictions.

Western Australia premier Mark McGowan confirmed Essendon will still be allowed to fly to Perth for Saturday night's clash with West Coast at Optus Stadium.

"Further reviews of CCTV footage will be undertaken to determine if the advice to test and isolate will be broadened beyond these areas", the department said in a tweet early on Wednesday morning.

Under government guidelines, they will all be tested on arrival in the WA capital and isolate until they receive a negative result.

The Western Bulldogs have already had their weekly preparations interrupted, with the AFL club's players and staff forced into isolation after an employee attended an exposure site.
