Australia's Victoria state says next 24 hours critical as COVID cluster grows

But the worsening situation in Victoria means the Suns-Hawks game in the Northern Territory is set to be canned.

"The MCG has advised that extensive cleaning of the venue takes place after each match and, out of an abundance of caution, a deep clean of the identified zone is now being undertaken", the AFL said in a statement on Wednesday.

The AFL was thrown another curve ball when the South Australian government announced it would shut its borders to the greater Melbourne area.

Victoria Health has listed the venue as tier two and requested anyone at the grounds between 12pm and 5pm to get tested urgently and isolate until a negative result is received.

The Bombers will fly to Perth ahead of Saturday's game against West Coast, while Carlton will depart for Sydney ahead of Sunday's match against the Swans.

An alert has been issued for members of a NSW sporting club who attended an event in Victoria after health authorities learned it was attended by a positive case of coronavirus.

It means the AFL will now have to seek an exemption for the Adelaide Crows to travel for Sunday's clash with Richmond at the MCG.

ACT Health has warned Canberrans to remain vigilant for COVID-19 and get tested even if they have mild symptoms.

The state's acting premier, James Merlino, said he would not rule out further restrictions for the capital of Melbourne. "It's fair to say the next 24 hours are going to be particularly critical".

"Only four reasons to leave the home for players: That's obviously goods and services. care and compassionate reasons, exercise and other essential reasons such as petrol station, post offices, vets, etcetera", SEN reporter Sam Edmund told Dwayne's World on Wednesday.

Western Bulldogs players and staff were all tested, and cleared, of having Covid-19 on Tuesday after being linked to the growing outbreak in Melbourne.

The Western Bulldogs have already had their weekly preparations interrupted, with the AFL club's players and staff forced into isolation after an employee attended an exposure site.

"It is a bit of a throwback in a sense (to 2020), but we're sort of well versed and well prepared", he said on Wednesday.

The AFL on Tuesday paused ticket sales for games in round 11 and 12, with the Victorian government yet to make a decision on crowd sizes.

However, the latest cases include five infections previously reported on Tuesday, with the latest update bringing the number of active cases in the state to 23.
