Israel Turned Down Offers of Ceasefire With Hamas, Netanyahu Says

Biden said U.S. diplomacy was in high gear with national security and defense staff "in constant contact with their counterparts in the Middle East - not just with the Israelis, but also with everyone from the Egyptians and the Saudis to the Emiratis".

The death toll from Israeli air strikes on Gaza has climbed to 65, including 16 children, as the United Nations warned of "full-scale war".

Israel has said it's targeting buildings where Hamas - the militant group that controls Gaza - stores weapons or has offices.

US President Joe Biden on Wednesday said he had spoken to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and expected the violence between the Israelis and Palestinians to end "sooner than later".

A senior Hamas commander was among those killed in the strikes thus far.

"I believe they suspect that the Biden administration, as with the previous Obama-Biden administration, would be very sympathetic to the Palestinians and would push back on the Israelis", he added, saying that was a "pattern" with Obama for eight years. Like that previous war, neither side appears to have an exit strategy.

The fighting has touched off strife within Israel, where some in the Arab minority mounted violent pro-Palestinian protests. And looming in the background is an global war crimes investigation. At least 30 explosions were heard within a matter of minutes just after dawn on Wednesday.
