A Saturday birthday party in Colorado Springs turned into a Mother's Day tragedy when a man walked into the family gathering and fatally shot six people before taking his own life early Sunday.

Perhaps the most infamous shooting in the state of Colorado came in 1999 two students went on a shooting spree at Columbine High School, killing 13 people before they took their own lives. None of the children at the party were injured, authorities said.

Anyone who has information about the shooting can call the Colorado Springs Police Department at (719) 444-7000 or Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (719) 634-STOP (7867) or 1-800-222-8477.

According to a Monday report from the Associated Press, the suspect is believed to have been the boyfriend of a female victim at the party.

Some time after midnight, he received a call from the son of one of the women at the party, who was crying on the phone.

The Denver Post quoted neighbour Yenifer Reyes as saying she was awakened by the sound of gunfire. "Then I started hearing sirens", Ms Reyes told the newspaper.

The motive for the attack is not known.

"Words fall short to describe the tragedy that took place this morning", said Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski.

"My heart breaks for the families who have lost someone they love and for the children who have lost their parents", his statement read.

None of the children at the party were injured in the attack, according to the police, and they were being cared for by family members.

"My vow to this community and to the families who have lost someone today, is that this department will do everything we can to find you the answers you deserve and be here for you with an unwavering support", Niski said in the police statement.

"This horrific act has resulted in the death of six adult victims".

As the U.S. celebrates Mothers Day, Jared Polis, the governor of Colorado, called the killings "devastating".

"Multiple lives were taken today by this awful act of violence". Also killed were Perez's wife Mayra, her sister Sandra Ibarra and her brother Jose Ibarra, family members say.
