Today marks the first step in our cautious return to global travel, with measures designed above all else to protect public health and ensure we don't throw away the hard-fought gains we've all strived to earn this year.

Demand for flights to Portugal is surging, indicating that many holidaymakers hope the summer hotspot will be on the Government's green travel list when it is published on Friday. Looking at the map above, you can see that the main green area that stands out is Australia and New Zealand.

"By contrast, the European Union has said vaccinated people will be able to travel without restrictions, which leaves the UK at risk of falling behind and not opening up worldwide travel to key markets across Europe as well as the United States". As COVID numbers continue to fall and vaccination rates increase, other countries should make the green list in the coming months.

He said that the colours will be reviewed every three weeks.

What does British Airways think?

Travel, said the announcement of £20 packages is "great news - but only for Tui customers".

"We must make absolutely sure that the countries we reconnect with are safe", he said.

Industry bosses have urged further clarity on when other holiday destinations could be added to the quarantine-free green list amid criticism the Government had been too cautious in its approach to unlocking global travel.

British Airways boss Sean Doyle said this advice was "disappointing", adding: "We can not stress more greatly that the United Kingdom urgently needs travel between it and other low-risk countries, like the USA, to restart the economy, support devastated industries and reunite loved ones".

The traffic light system means that travelers will be treated differently depending on where they've come from. The laboratory tests would normally cost £120 ($167) each and with travelers expected to undertake at least two tests per trip the reduction will offer a considerable saving to families seeking to travel overseas. Test results will not be stated in the app and the process for booking and presenting test results for travel remains unchanged. All travelers must also take a PCR test on day two.

The only large European holiday destination on the green list is Portugal.

However, unlike all those countries on the Amber or Red lists, there is no need to quarantine on return from Green countries, or take additional tests, unless the post-arrival test is positive.

"Amber" travelers will qualify for the test to release scheme, which allows holidaymakers to take a PCR test after five days' quarantine.

Brian Strutton, general secretary of pilots' union Balpa, accused the Government of an "excess of caution", adding that it is "extremely disappointing for everyone who works in the travel sector and the millions of people who are desperate to jet away on holiday or business".

Border Force will be checking that arriving passengers have complied with current health measures, and passengers can help reduce delays by completing all necessary requirements before entering the country. Lincoln confirmed that the strict checks that have been brought in since the pandemic started would continue.
