Melvin and Biden were seated at least six feet apart for the interview, though CDC guidance explicitly requires adherents to keep face masks on even when they are six feet apart. The president described mask-wearing a a "patriotic responsibility, for God's sake".

Health groups are now attempting to help people who faced access barriers, or who still have questions about whether they should be vaccinated. "Are we no longer going to see the president of the United States outside with a mask on?"

And in that clip you just played just previous to that portion of the soundbite he said to Craig Melvin, 'hey I know we're both vaccinated-right now we're socially distanced, but even though we're both vaccinated if we weren't socially distanced we would be wearing masks.' What clue does that tell America?

"And so it's a small precaution to take that has a profound impact".

"Sure, sure", Biden answered - before going on to say the opposite.

"It's making sure your wife, your children, you're, if in fact they haven't been vaccinated, making sure that they're not going to get sick".

"Yeah, we're gonna adopt the CDC guidance on mask-wearing, especially outdoors for people who are fully vaccinated, two weeks after being vaccinated, which we think is an important thing for our students and our faculty and our staff".

He said that scientists are "convinced by the data that the odds of getting or giving the virus to others is very very low if you've both been fully vaccinated and out in the open air".

"Vaccinations are the way we will put this pandemic behind us and get back to normal life", Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said in a statement announcing the change.
