"Immediately upon learning that this staff member was even at risk of exposure, the premier left the legislature to be tested", the statement said. Mr. Ford has since tested negative but is isolating in Toronto and continuing his duties as Premier.

Ford is isolating in Toronto.

Other members of the premier's office who had close contact with the staff member who tested positive will also isolate, Ford's office said.

Although Ford is now isolating, his office said that he will continue to carry out his duties as premier and communicate with the public.

Public health experts, labour groups and local officials have been calling for sick-leave support for workers for months, arguing it would reduce COVID-19 spread in workplaces.

Prior, the Ford government had repeatedly said that the federal Canada Sickness Recovery Benefit, which retroactively pays employees if they miss 50 percent a workweek, was all employees needed, however, the Ontario's Science Advisory Table now points towards a more comprehensive provincial paid sick days program as something that it believes is needed to get the pandemic under control.

The premier has been absent in the legislature over the last two days and when Health Minister Christine Elliot was asked where he was, she said he was busy and trying to find vaccines for everyone.
