The officer takes a few steps toward a group of people in the driveway when the girl, who was Black, starts swinging a knife wildly at another girl or woman, who falls backward.

"We know based on this footage, the officer took action to protect another young girl in our community", Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said at the news conference.

"It's just so ironic", he said.

"We will share information that we can as soon as it becomes available", he continued.

According to the Columbus Dispatch, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation convened on the scene Tuesday night (April 20) to investigate the fatal shooting by a Columbus police officer.

"The death of a 15-year-old child is devastating. Tonight, we pray for this family, we pray for this city, and we pray for our neighbours".

Chief Woods showed a video to reporters at a late night new conference. "She was loving", Hazel Bryant, who said she was the victim's aunt, told Columbus ABC affiliate WSYX near the scene of the shooting.

Police did not identify the girl or her age Tuesday. According to WBNS-TV, the girl had called 911 because girls were fighting outside her home. Initial body camera footage released by investigators shows the teen attacking two other people with what appeared to be a knife before a responding officer fired multiple shots, fatally wounding her. "If an officer has violated policy or the law, if they have, they will be held accountable".

The Columbus Dispatch reported a crowd of protesters had gathered near a home on the city's southeast side where the shooting occurred, just minutes before the guilty verdict was announced against the police officer charged with murdering George Floyd past year. The shooting took place a short time later, according to police. "It's not okay", he said, "and it can't continue on".

How does U.S. fix police-community relations?

Elsewhere, police in OH were called to a disturbance yesterday after a female contacted emergency services and told them another female was trying to stab her.

The Columbus Dispatch reported that demonstrators had gathered near the scene of the shooting earlier in the day.

She appears unresponsive and blood is pooled on the ground beneath her. When officers arrived on the scene, they encountered a scuffle between several girls.

Graham recalled hearing four gunshots just outside his southeast Columbus home. But things changed quickly, she said.

"We don't know very much as it stands, and as we watched the verdict from Minneapolis many talked about the sigh of relief - but there is a truth that for so many in our community there is no relief. When police are killed, the person is brought in and justice is served", Graham said.

The officer who opened fire was not identified. "Because as you're getting one phone call that he was guilty, I'm getting the next phone call that this is happening in my neighbourhood".
