"Although this child had pre-existing health conditions that complicated their illness, it was the virus that caused their death", Henry said.

The child was from the Fraser Health region, which spans from Burnaby to Boston Bar, but had been getting specialized care at BC Children's Hospital in Vancouver.

There were eight deaths over the weekend, for a total of 1,538 since the pandemic began.

A child under the age of two has died as a result of complications from COVID-19.

There were 1,027 new COVID-19 cases from Friday to Saturday, 933 from Saturday to Sunday and 1,000 in the last 24 hours.

Those found outside of their health region will be subject to a fine.

"It is critical that we focus our efforts on continuing to do the things we know reduce transmission", said Dr. Henry Monday, emphasizing the need for B.C. residents to be "purposeful" with our in-person social interactions.

As the COVID-19 case count remains high in B.C., it was the death of a child under the age of two that had an emotional impact on provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry this afternoon.

Horgan says Public Safety Minster Mike Farnworth is expected to provide more details about the travel restrictions on Friday.

BC health officials have announced several new public health orders aimed at restricting travel across the province.

Correction: A previous version of this story reported the child who died was two years old.
