Police said multiple people had been shot but did not confirm the number or their status.

Ms Cook said two others were treated at the facility by the medical staff and released and that "multiple" others had walked in to hospitals in nearby areas.

Investigators are working to gather information on the suspect, who has not yet been identified.

In an earlier tweet, Perrine said Interstate 70 near the facility was closed in both directions, but it was later reopened.

It was the latest in a recent string of mass shootings across the US.

It's unclear how many workers were on duty during the shooting.

At the end of March, a gunman killed four people, including a 9-year-old boy, at a real estate office in Southern California.

Police had previously said the gunman shot and killed himself.

A witness says he "saw a man with a submachine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle, and he was firing in the open".

Fedex released a statement early on Friday saying it was cooperating with authorities and working to get more information.

In a statement, the courier and delivery company said: "We are aware of the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility near the Indianapolis airport".

Some said employees were not allowed to have their phones with them while working shifts at the facility, making it hard to contact them. Police asked anyone with family members who work at the facility that they weren't able to get in contact with to go to the Holiday Inn Express at 8555 Stansted Drive.

We will focus on reports from officials and other authorities, credible news outlets and reporters who are at the scene.
