Prosecutors and defense lawyers are in discussions about Joel Greenberg, a former tax collector in Florida's Seminole County, entering a guilty plea, and a judge on Thursday gave him until May 15 to do so, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

CNN has previously reported that investigators are examining whether Gaetz's involvement with other young women broke federal sex-trafficking and prostitution laws, according to the person briefed on the probe and another person briefed on the matter. The Daily Beast did not use the nickname in its reporting because the girl had only just turned 18 less than six months before the Venmo transaction. In the field on the app to describe the goal of the payments, Greenberg said that the funds were for "Tuition", "School", and "School".

Greenberg was indicted last year for allegedly trafficking a teenage girl for sex in 2017, and the Justice Department is also trying to determine whether Gaetz had sex with the 17-year-old, according to sources. Matt Gaetz who is now facing sex trafficking charges, is considering taking a plea deal - which Greenberg's attorney hinted could involve Greenberg cooperating with the federal government's investigation into allegations involving Gaetz.

Greenberg is now seeking a plea deal with federal prosecutors.

"There are exactly zero credible (or even non-credible) accusers willing to come forward by name and state on the public record that I behaved improperly toward them", Gaetz wrote.

No charges have been brought against Gaetz, and he has denied all allegations against him.

Gaetz has denied all of the allegations and has tried to portray the sex trafficking investigation as connected to an alleged extortion plot against him.

In a column published on Monday on the Washington Examiner website, Gaetz declared he had no plans to resign from Congress.
