Rep. Matt Gaetz reportedly asked Trump for a blanket pardon

The investigation targeting Gaetz was launched past year when Trump was still president, sources familiar with the matter have told ABC News.

As then-President Trump's term wound down, Matt Gaetz, one of Trump's staunchest allies, privately asked for a blanket pre-emptive pardon, two sources tell the New York Times.

It's unclear if he knew of the DOJ investigation, which began under Attorney General William Bar while Trump was in office, when he allegedly asked for the pardon. After all, the probe began while Bill Barr was still Attorney General (a role Barr served in until December 23).

Gaetz, who had always been one of the president's most ardent supporters and a consistent purveyor of conspiracy theories about election fraud, appeared on The Ingraham Angle in November 2020 with an interesting strategy pitch for Trump.

"President Trump should pardon Michael Flynn".

Trump was aware of Gaetz's request, but the idea was quickly dismissed inside the White House, sources told ABC News. "Of course, none of what they say ever amounts to anything, yet it is endlessly repeated by leftist television anchors such as Chris Cuomo, who uses his platform to cover for his brother's appalling subjection of nursing home patients to death by the coronavirus", Gaetz contended.

Gaetz has repeatedly denied the allegations against him.

"Entry-level political operatives have conflated a pardon call from Representative Gaetz - where he called for President Trump to pardon "everyone from himself, to his administration, to Joe Exotic" - with these false and increasingly freaky, partisan allegations against him", the spokesman said in a statement.

Over the past four years, there may have been no member of Congress more loyal or eager to defend Trump from his critics.

"Over the past several weeks, my family and I have been victims of an organized criminal extortion involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million while threatening to smear my name", Gaetz said in a statement.

"Just as they once falsely attacked President Donald Trump as a Russian asset, Justice Brett Kavanaugh as a gang rapist, and even John McCain as having fathered a child out of wedlock, they now attack me".
