'We will also be undertaking random temperature checks of those arriving as an extra precaution, ' Ms Ardern said.

Kiwis have been free to travel to most Australian jurisdictions without being forced into hotel quarantine since October.

Ms Ardern called the bubble a "world-first" arrangement.

New Zealand could open its borders to Australian travellers as soon as the end of the week, New Zealand broadcaster 1NEWS reported on Tuesday (April 6) without saying where it obtained the information.

Ms Ardern warned people to be prepared to have their travel plans changed at short notice, including landing and going into hotel quarantine.

The Trans-Tasman travel bubble has already seen Air New Zealand ramp up its schedule significantly.

The national carrier hopes to fly from NZ's three other worldwide airports, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown, when the bubble is announced.

If New Zealand detects multiple cases of unknown origin, the government will likely suspend flights for a set period of time.

There will be protocols in case to reduce the risk of Covid-19 being transferred between the two countries, including travellers from Australia flying on "green-zone" flights, without people coming from high-risk countries.

This means that residents of both countries will be able to travel freely between each, without needing to quarantine for two weeks.

"[This travel bubble] represents an arrangement I do not believe we have seen in any other part of the world".

A West Coast tourism business is eagerly awaiting the opening of a travel bubble with Australia. The airline has reportedly pushed back cross-Tasman flights until September.

The idea of the travel bubble has been in the news for almost 12 months but has previously been scuttled due to outbreaks.
