Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet, a petty officer third class assigned to Fort Detrick, began shooting with a rifle inside a Navy-related business at the Riverside Tech Park, causing people inside to flee, Frederick police and Fort Detrick officials said at a news conference.

Lando said shortly after, authorities learned the suspect had traveled to U.S. Army Garrison Fort Detrick, about a 10-minute drive away, where the suspect was shot.

According to the base, the armed suspect breached the Nalin Pond gate.

Citing police, The Baltimore Sun reported that both of the victims sustained life-threatening injuries in the shooting and were flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

The Navy will continue to provide updates on the situation as more details come in, the U.S. Navy spokesperson told NBC News. The shooter, a Navy hospital corpsman, is deceased. The suspect then made his way to Fort Detrick, where he was shot and killed by personnel at the base. "Not even a quarter of a mile".

"As you can imagine, this is a very active scene right now", Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando told reporters on Tuesday morning. "There's no further threat to the Frederick city and Frederick County residents".

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story mistakenly identified Fort Detrick as a Naval base.

"When these incidents happen in other places, you're always grateful that it's not your community", O'Connor added. "And today it did". "And now it's happening in our backyards".
