Known as Canada's hockey dad, Walter Gretzky died Thursday at age 82 after battling Parkinson's disease and other health issues in recent years.

"For me, he was the reason I fell in love with the game of hockey".

He touched thousands of lives with his kindness and generosity, and Walter Gretzky is being remembered as everybody's hockey dad.

"Most of all, I will miss your trivia, that I could never answer".

Two hockey sticks - one full-sized, one miniature - and a Canadian flag adorned the sign marking off Walter Gretzky's parking spot outside the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre.

Gretzky said family, including Wayne, surrounded Mr. Gretzky in his last hours at his Varadi Avenue home where his daughter, Kim Kohler, had ensured he could stay, as he wished.

Walter was born in Ontario to Belarusian immigrants.

Walter Gretzky became a household name in Canada but much like the values he instilled in his son, he remained true to his humble roots.

"People are always telling me, 'You must have eyes in the back of your head, '" he wrote in the book. "Baloney. I've just learned to guess what's going to happen next".
