White House says 'no' to sharing vaccines with Canada and Mexico

Mexican magazine Proceso said Lopez Obrador had asked Biden for help on vaccines in January.

Biden noted that while the USA and Mexico haven't always been "perfect neighbors", both countries are safer when there's a collaborative relationship, particularly where the COVID-19 pandemic is concerned.

López Obrador thanked Biden for communicating his desire to base their relationship on respect and equality.

Mexico has led pleas for vaccines to be shared more equally around the world, calling on rich nations to avoid hoarding shots.

"It is important for Mexico, and we must keep on cooperating for further development based on independence and autonomy, potentiating what our peoples mean to us", he told the United States leader.

It was Biden's second bilateral meeting with a foreign leader since becoming president on Jan 20.

The video meeting will follow Biden's first such "summit" with the leader of the United States' northern neighbor Canada, Justin Trudeau.

The Mexican president estimated that the USA economy would need 600,000 to 800,000 migrant workers a year, underscoring the importance of "reaching a good agreement" on migration.

USA civil society groups estimate that some 70,000 undocumented migrants were deported to Mexico between January 2019 and December 2020.

They also agreed to work together to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, to boost economic cooperation, and to work together on climate change, the statement said.

Though top officials say the border is closed to them, hundreds are being admitted each day.
