New Jersey to receive 70000 doses of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine

The news of CVS listing teachers as eligible comes as Gov. Charlie Baker is set to make an announcement at the West Parish School in Gloucester at 9 a.m. Wednesday about COVID-19 vaccinations.

But a lot is yet to be done, he said.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki also announced Tuesday that the federal government was increasing supply of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines to states next week to 15.2 million doses per week, up from 14.5 million previously. At least some of the hurdles that the USA now faces in terms of actually getting people vaccinated could still be there in May.

Compared to the two-dose versions produced by Moderna and Pfizer, the J&J vaccine is less resource intensive to distribute and administer, making it a critical piece to USA plans to spread vaccinations around the world - but only once Americans are inoculated. "We have to take bold action and overwhelm this".

"We wrote our first story at The New York Times about a possible partnership between Merck and [Johnson & Johnson] for manufacturing on January 21", a reporter said to Psaki during Tuesday's press briefing.

Teachers aren't now eligible to get vaccinated in MA per the state's vaccine rollout, a frustration for educators and lawmakers alike.

The official called J&J CEO Alex Gorsky to express concern, and later called Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier.

"This is the type of collaboration between companies we saw in World War II", Biden said.

But it was after the early February phone call that officials felt like J&J had embraced the push, said a second official who was involved in the talks. "They understood this was a wartime effort. This was their time". "You have the potential to use the DPA if there isn't cooperation", one of the officials said.

It was not immediately clear when the effect of Merck's assistance would be reflected in supply.

The US Food and Drug Administration issued its emergency use authorization on Saturday.

Before the approval of the J&J shot, Biden had suggested that it would take until the end of July to have enough vaccine for every adult in the U.S.

"We expect this manufacturing arrangement will enhance our production capacity so that we can supply beyond our current commitments", J&J said in a statement.

Drugmaker Merck & Co. will help produce rival Johnson & Johnson's newly approved coronavirus vaccine in an effort to expand supply more quickly, the White House said Tuesday.

"We need vaccinators, people who put the shots in people's arms, millions of Americans' arms".

The Biden administration is racing against variants of COVID-19 that could make the existing vaccines less effective. Soon the emphasis will turn from scarcity to persuasion as the administration and public health officials work to reach people who may be reluctant to get the vaccine.
