Gregg Popovich on Texas lifting mask mandate: 'This is really ridiculous'

Abbott's latest directive will go into effect on Wednesday, March 10.

Waco ISD's superintendent said she expects masks to be required on Waco ISD campuses through at least the end of the school year following Governor Abbott's announcement that he is ending the statewide mask mandate.

California's governor, Gavin Newsom, called Abbott's move "absolutely reckless", while Andy Biggs, a Republican politician, called for a similar opening of the state of Arizona.

According to Abbott's office, by the end of March every senior who wants a vaccine would be able to get one.

"Also, I am ending the statewide mask mandate", said the governor, fresh off a statewide crisis that threw millions into the freezing cold without power or water, nearly as an afterthought.

"Covid has not suddenly disappeared", he added, "but state mandates are no longer needed".

Now, local residents fear the thousands of tourists who will probably descend on the state, just in time for Spring Break.

During Tuesday's press conference Mississippi State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs warned that new cases and deaths are increasing, adding the Health Department is still "strongly recommending" individuals older than 65 or anyone older than 16 with a chronic medical condition avoid social gatherings until they have been vaccinated.

More than 42,000 people have died with Covid in Texas since the start of the pandemic.

Abbott said his executive order has some safeguards in place if hospitalizations begin to rise again in parts of Texas.

The governor said he was able to lift the restrictions because Texas, the third most-populous USA state, had administered almost 5.7 million vaccine shots to its 29 million residents. "However, under no circumstance, can a county judge put anybody in jail for not following COVID orders and no penalties can be imposed for failing to wear a face mask".

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued the most sweeping rollback of coronavirus restrictions of any USA state on Tuesday, lifting a mask mandate and saying most businesses may open at full capacity next week.

Abbott pointed to a number of positive statistics as he detailed the state's reopening plans, including a reduction in active COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, and the lowest positivity rate the state has seen in months. "Now we are putting our focus toward rapid vaccine distribution".
