Canada approves AstraZeneca COVID vaccine

Experts advising the Ontario government said this week more contagious variants of COVID-19 are expected to make up 40 per cent of cases by the second week of March.

"If the FDA approves the use of this new vaccine, we have a plan to roll it out as quickly as Johnson & Johnson can make it", US President Joe Biden said Thursday.

The FDA's report comes two days before the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee are scheduled to discuss whether to grant J&J emergency use authorization.

Bahrain became the first nation to authorize Johnson & Johnson's new single-dose coronavirus vaccine for emergency use on Thursday, the government announced, just a day after US regulators concluded the shot offers strong protection against severe COVID-19.

Black and Hispanic adults and people 18 to 29 are most likely to say they want to "wait and see" how the vaccine works among the general public before they get it.

Beyond the numbers, experts say the Johnson & Johnson vaccine has some significant advantages over the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines - and not only because it requires a single dose, boosting convenience.

In a 44,000-person trial, the vaccine overall was 66 percent effective at preventing moderate-to-severe cases of Covid-19 compared with a placebo.

US health advisers endorsed a one-dose COVID-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson on Friday, putting the nation on the cusp of adding an easier-to-use option to fight the pandemic. "We live in a much more complicated pandemic today".

"Although cases, hospitalizations and deaths are coming down, there's still a lot of community transmission in this country", Moss said.

The long-anticipated J&J shot promises to offer the US a third vaccine option and help speed vaccinations by requiring just one dose instead of two.

Fewer participants reported experiencing skin redness and swelling after receiving the J&J vaccine, the FDA report said.

Trudeau also announced on Friday a partnership with Mississauga, Ont.'s Verity Pharmaceuticals and the Serum Institute of India that will deliver two million more doses of the AstraZeneca jab - in addition to the 20 million doses Canada already secured with AstraZeneca.

The J&J vaccine uses a common-cold causing adenovirus, which has been genetically modified so that it can't replicate, to carry the gene for a key protein of the coronavirus into human cells.

J&J's vaccine protects against the worst effects of COVID-19 after one shot, and it can be stored up to three months at refrigerator temperatures, making it easier to handle than the previous vaccines, which must be frozen.

Other parts of the world already are facing which-is-best challenges.

"Right now, it's not vaccine against vaccine, it's vaccine against virus", said Dr Nirav Shah, director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. AstraZeneca's vaccine, for instance, is cleared for use in Britain and Europe after data suggested it was about 70 percent effective.

Health Canada approved the AstraZeneca vaccine for use in people 18 and over, expressing confidence it would work for the elderly even though some countries, including France, have authorized it only for use in people under 65, saying there is not enough evidence it works in older adults.
