US President Joe Biden at a virtual meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in the East Room of the White House, Tuesday, February 23, 2021, in Washington.

"We expect the president, during the meeting, to highlight the strong and deep partnership between the United States and Canada as neighbours, friends, and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies", Psaki would only say.

The first face-to-face meeting between Canada's Prime Minister and the newly minted U.S.

After talking for about two hours, the two leaders emerged and said they planned to work closely together to beat the COVID-19 pandemic and combat climate change, with a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig were arrested in China in 2018 and formally indicted in June 2020.

Asked if Canada may get a waiver from Biden's "Buy American" order, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday that "no changes are anticipated". "We're going to work together until we get their safe return", he said.

Trudeau has said he expressed his disappointment with the decision in his first call with Biden, but later highlighted what he described as the alignment between the two administrations.

"By being on the same line on several subjects, like climate change or economic revival, we can do more together", Trudeau s office said.

What was said on climate change?

The prime minister and president discussed efforts to address key regional, national, and global challenges, and priorities in multilateral forums, including the G7, the G20, and the United Nations.

The session is being billed as the first bilateral meeting between the two countries since Biden took office on January 20, though the leaders held a lengthy phone call days after the new President was sworn in.

Biden and Trudeau discussed collaboration to beat COVID-19 - from keeping key supplies moving and supporting science and research to joint efforts through global institutions. Canada is now receiving doses from plants in Europe.

"We're focused on ourselves, the United States is focused on itself".

The meeting, which will be virtual due to the coronavirus crisis, will aim to elevate collaboration on shared concerns at a time when the relationship between the close allies has been strained by Biden's decision to block the Canada-backed Keystone XL pipeline. It is in our best interest to work together to make things better for our people and both our countries.

The two leaders - Biden in the Oval Office in Washington and Trudeau in the prime minister's office in Ottawa - will first deliver brief remarks in front of the media at the start of their meeting, according to a senior Biden administration official who provided a preview of the meeting.

Also taking part were US Vice President Kamala Harris, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, along with their Canadian counterparts. Trudeau was accompanied by his finance minister, Chrystia Freeland, and others.

Canada has been squeezed by vaccine production problems in Europe, prompting calls for US help - especially since a key Pfizer manufacturing facility in MI is just two hours from the border.

Meng remains under house arrest. To ensure a strong economic recovery that benefits everyone, the two leaders further discussed the importance of avoiding measures that may constrain the critical trade and supply-chain security between our countries.

The two leaders intend to resurrect the North American Leaders' Summit - a trilateral meeting of Canada, the USA and Mexico, more commonly known as the "Three Amigos" summit, which hasn't been convened since 2016.
