Additionally, there are limitations with regard to platform support, but you can play the games on TV screens, tablets, and phones. The new Plex Arcade service lets you stream a collection of classic Atari games to your devices. Instead it works much the same way as the core Plex media streaming service - you set up a Plex server on an always-running PC and then you can stream to any supported device. The technology to make it available was already 95% built, so the team chose to put together the game streaming service as a surprise for users, as well as a way to expand Plex's core mission of becoming a broader entertainment platform.

The company says it actually kicked around the idea of adding games to Plex for years, but over the course of 2020 in particular, the team was drawn to the idea even more out of personal interest and a need for a distraction.

Now Plex is also getting into the game streaming business. According to Plex, these are the now supported platform emulators. For now, if your game does not show up in the library, it's not compatible.

For the new gaming feature, Plex has partnered with Parsec to ensure low-latency streaming and Atari, to provide classic gaming titles like Centipede, Lunar Lander, Food Fight, Desert Falcon, Missile Command, Gravitar, and more.

You can get the Plex Arcade subscription for $2.99 per month if you're already a Plex Pass holder.

Unlike game streaming services from Google, Microsoft, and NVIDIA, Plex Arcade doesn't stream games from the cloud. For nonsubscribers, Plex Arcade is $4.99 per month. First, you need to be using Plex on a Windows or macOS-based media server. Plex is also offering a seven day free trial for those who want to test the service before subscribing.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I don't think Atari is the real selling point of Plex Arcade; it's about the ROMs. Ultimately, gameplay is restricted to Android (mobile and TV), iOS, tvOS, and the Chrome web browser. Plex recommends the Sony DualShock 4 or Xbox One controller for the best results.
