Mark Lawrenson is backing Manchester City to make it four wins in a row in the Premier League by claiming a 3-0 home victory over Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday night.

City held on, however, to move into the top four with 32 points from 16 games, four behind leaders Manchester United and one behind champions Liverpool having played one match less.

Pep Guardiola's side have games in hand, of course.

De Bruyne slipped a pass to Foden whose first touch left two defenders for dead before the England global dispatched a slide rule low shot inside the post and beyond the dive of Sanchez.

Surprisingly, City lost their grip of the game in the final 20 minutes and Brighton sensed an opportunity.

England worldwide Foden took his tally for the season to eight goals in all competitions at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, making him City's highest-scoring player in 2020-21.

Brighton were not completely devoid of ambition and went close when Leonardo Trossard curled a shot just beyond the far post.

Mahrez was unable to supply the finish at the end of an intricate move around the visitors' box, before De Bruyne was again denied by Sanchez following a counter-attack from Brighton's first corner. Riyad Mahrez shot wide and Gundogan brought another good save out of Sanchez before Silva thumped the follow-up against the woodwork.

But City lacked the control they had in the first half and never looked entirely comfortable with such a narrow lead.

City are now unbeaten in 14 matches in all competitions and building momentum although, as the game comes under increased scrutiny, their goal celebration could attract criticism amid the coronavirus pandemic.

But Ederson was back in goal following a spell on the sidelines after testing positive for Covid-19 and Gabriel Jesus, who also contracted the virus, appeared as a second-half substitute.

Substitute Sterling blazed his last-gasp penalty over after De Bruyne pounced on a wayward header from Lewis Dunk and was taken down by Sanchez.
