TCL To Launch A Rollable Or Foldable Phone This Year

Fair play to LG for rolling the dice though (geddit?).

The specifications of LG's rollable, and more importantly, the mechanism behind how the extending screen gimmick has been brought to life, remain shrouded in mystery.

The LG Rollable is the new phone to come out of LG's "exploratory" lab that takes out-of-the-box ideas and tries to turn them into real products you might buy. We should point out that this device may never make it market, but its appearance during the company's CES 2021 event suggests that it will, in our opinion. These devices can expand and reconfigure themselves from a 6.7-inch phone to a 7.8-inch tablet with "a simple tap of the finger". But it is not definitely confirmed whether it will be a foldable or a rollable. From that, there were speculations that the Rollable was a concept phone and not ready to be released. This is the same as what we have seen with the Oppo rollable device.

LG has not yet released specs regarding tech or display size, though Nikkei reports that LG is partnering with China's BOE Technology Group on the rollable screen technology.

TCL also showcased another concept of a much larger 17-inch rollable display. It then rolls the display back up to return to its original form.

The only thing known of the smartphone is that it would have an nearly bezel-less design that maximizes the entire display with its screen, rolling to extend more of it to an nearly mini-tablet size. It will join the likes of Oppo and TCL, who have also shown similar prototypes in the past and at this year's CES respectively. We will see the newer generation of already exiting foldable along with new ones, and also, rollable phones.
