"It was an error in judgment", Willis tells PEOPLE in an exclusive statement.

He adds, "Be safe out there everyone and let's continue to mask up".

"People inside the store became upset that Willis, 65, wasn't wearing a mask - despite having a bandanna tied around his neck, which he could have easily pulled up", the newspaper reported.

Page Six reports that Willis was seen inside the pharmacy without a mask, which anxious other customers and led staff to ask the actor to consider the safety of others or leave.

On Tuesday, the Die Hard star began trending on Twitter as the photo circulated with social media users criticizing the actor for forgoing a face mask.

It's a particularly troubling spotting considering Bruce Willis is living in the epicenter of California's COVID-19 emergency.

Willis spent most of the pandemic quarantining with his family in their home in Idaho, where he owns several businesses. Los Angeles County is currently at 0% hospital capacity, with its seven-day daily average for positive cases now over 20% higher than the week prior.

However, Scout hosed down the rumours when she explained Heming's absence during an episode of her self-help podcast Dopey.
