Co-Head of Television at Amazon Studios Vernon Sanders said about the final season renewal, "We'd like to thank Naren, Andrew [Kosove], Broderick [Johnson], everyone at Alcon [Television Group] and the entire cast and crew of The Expanse for the hard work and love they have put into the series over these past seasons".

We should have a better idea about the direction they're taking once The Expanse season 5 debuts on Amazon Prime Video on December 16, 2020. That series first premiered on Syfy in 2015, but was cancelled by the cable channel in 2018 after three seasons. Another option would be to cram the entire two-book Free Navy arc into season 5, followed by the entire three-book Laconia arc into season 6, but that seems like an terrible lot of ground to cover. We're very happy we can give the incredibly loyal and passionate fans of The Expanse the satisfying conclusion to the series that they deserve.

Season 5 of The Expanse launches its first three episodes December 16 on Amazon Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories around the world. He added the production team has a feeling fans will "love how seasons five and six unfold".

There's "tentative" plans to begin a shooting run in late January, 2021, Deadline has reported, but the penciled-in dates, and an expected late 2021 release date, are all "subject to change amid fluid global conditions". However, actor Cas Anvar, the target of an investigation of sexual misconduct earlier this year, will be left out and will not return as the character Alex Kamal.

He will still be included in the show's fifth season, however. We also have plenty of unfinished business to look forward to from the likes of Holden, Alex, Naomi Nagata (Dominique Tipper), Bobbie Draper (Frankie Adams), Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), Camina Drummer (Cara Gee), Fred Johnson (Chad L. Coleman), and everyone's favorite mechanic, Amos Burton (Wes Chatham).

Amazon StudiosThe Expanse's ever-growing cast will likely expand again in Seasons 5 and 6.

The popular Amazon series is based on a number of books by James S.A. Corey.

No word yet on which books the final season will dip into, but they'll have some sorting out to do, as there are now eight novels and eight shorter works that make up the popular series.

The second-last season of The Expanse is just a few weeks away. Season 5 will run for 10 episodes.
