Sehrou Guirassy looked as though he had secured a point for his side with an equaliser minutes earlier, but Giroud profited from some poor Rennes defending to claim the win after Callum Hudson-Odoi had put the visitors in front in the first half.

Substitute Olivier Giroud then scored the eventual victor for Chelsea FC in second-half stoppage time after Serhou Guirassy had headed home an equaliser in the 85th minute.

The play of Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham has helped keep Giroud on the sidelines, with the France worldwide looking for a move in January to gain more minutes ahead of Euro 2020.

Giroud says he will make a decision on his Chelsea future in the January transfer window amid concerns over a lack of game time - but boss Lampard has reiterated his stance, in that he wants the striker to stay.

"The things behind the scenes, everybody kind of feels from the outside to be fair what a great professional he is and how highly regarded he is by his team-mates and myself", Lampard said.

"Maybe he will get some minutes, I am not sure yet, but he looks in good shape".

"So thankfully for me he's a player that always keeps the right attitude if he's not playing regularly, and I know when I call upon him that he comes in as he did today".

They are now on a 12-game unbeaten run across all competitions and have kept eight clean sheets in the process, and they will look to make it 13 consecutive matches without defeat in France.

"He is a naturally fit boy and I hope to have him travelling to Rennes with us on Tuesday".

"I have a problem because I've got Tammy who is playing well and obviously he did past year as well", Lampard told BT Sport. I have to look at it game by game and play him to get the best for us.

"A lot of them have played global minutes so we will see how they are over the next 24-48 hours".
