Sunday's American Music Awards, which took place in Los Angeles with a limited audience amid the pandemic, featured performances from artists including Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish, and the show's top prize of Artist of the Year went to Taylor Swift. "We need to heal", said host Taraji P. Henson as she opened the ceremony.

The Weeknd shocked fans when he walked on stage to accept his best soul/R&B album award at Sunday's American Music Awards with his face bloodied and covered in bandages. With these three trophies, Swift broke her own record for the highest number of AMA wins.

Justin's track with Dan + Shay, "10,000 Hours", picked up the Collaboration of the Year and Favourite Song - Country awards, while the superstar was named favourite male pop/rock artist.

Canadian singer The Weeknd, sporting a large bandage over his face, was the other big victor on Sunday, taking the trophies for best soul/R&B male artist as well as his album After Hours and song Heartless.

BTS won Favorite Social Artist. The Korean band also got the Favorite Duo or Group award. And despite performances from artists such as Jason Aldean, Luke Combs, cohosts Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker, and even Justin Bieber, this month's Country Music Awards recorded a new viewership low of 7.1 million.

But she was beaten in the best new artist category by Los Angeles singer Doja Cat, who was also named favourite female soul/R&B artist.

Masked dancers were the order of the night, kicking off with Bieber singing his hits Lonely and Holy before being joined by singer Shawn Mendes for their duet Monster.
