The news was shared by Netflix on social media.

According to the company, 62 million households watched the show in its first 28 days of release. It's also seeing unprecedented popularity overseas too, making the Netflix Top 10 in 92 countries.

Deadline reports The Queen's Gambit has hit the No. 1 spot in 63 countries, including the United Kingdom, and the top ten in 92 countries overall.

"I don't think any of us could have predicted that The Queen's Gambit - and the extraordinary Anya Taylor-Joy - would become the global phenomena they are today", says Peter Friedlander, Netflix Vice President of Original Series.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms this record-setting viewership number, though it adds the caveat that Netflix counts views by measuring whether a member account watches at least two minutes of a series or movie - AKA a little more than the preview that automatically plays on the home page, where The Queen's Gambit was heavily promoted by Netflix.

The show follows an orphaned female chess prodigy, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who struggles with drug addiction as she rises to become one of the world's best players.

Despite not knowing how The Queen's Gambit stacks up against other limited series, it has shown strong numbers in comparison to some recent Netflix successes. The Witcher, which is now shooting its second season, remains the service's biggest debut for an original series overall, bringing in 76 million households in that same timeframe. It also fell just a bit short of the limited-but-unscripted documentary series "Tiger King", which reached 64 million households during its first four weeks.

Indeed, its impact can be seen outside Netflix's viewing numbers.
