The 49-year-old managed Barcelona from 2008-12 and spent three years in charge of Germany's Bayern Munich before joining City.

The playmaker has been the centre of transfer rumours since handing in a transfer request earlier this year.

Pep Guardiola has said he hopes Lionel Messi will finish his career at Barcelona but admits he doesn't know what the future holds for the player as his contract at Camp Nou winds down.

Rivaldo has now revealed his take on the ongoing situation in Spain.

City will turn their attention to landing Messi and teaming him up with his former Barcelona boss Guardiola as their dream team to land the club's first Champions League crown. I can't see how our board will convince him to move back on that decision.

"In my opinion, only winning the Champions League or La Liga this season or having [Ronald] Koeman getting the team playing handsome football can convince Messi to reconsider his options".

The other two were won by Chelsea by seven points in 2016-17 and Liverpool by 18 last season.

City are believed to be preparing to make a move to sign Messi during the winter window.

City suffered a 2-0 loss to Tottenham on Saturday, a result which sees them sit 11th in the table, eight points behind leaders Spurs but having played one less game.

"Lionel Messi is a player from Barcelona", Guardiola told a news conference on Friday. If you have my opinion, as a person, I have huge gratitude for Barcelona and what they have done for me. They gave me absolutely everything from the start, from my time at the academy.

"What I want is [for him] to finish his career there".

"Leo Messi is a player from Barcelona".

Messi tried to exercise an exit clause in his contract allowing him to leave for free, but La Liga officials intervened and Barca president Josep Bartomeu refused to let him go.
