Despite his lack of regular game time at club level, he has been a mainstay for Wales and started both of their Nations League games during the worldwide break, scoring against Finland.

"I wouldn't say it's a release", the mercurial winger told BBC Sport when discussing his work with the Dragons over the past week.

The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has suggested the Toffees need to improve their options out wide and the Wales star has shown "exceptional quality" for both club and country.

His performances dipped strongly after that and he has since failed to recover but he did at least play plenty of minutes last season.

"I feel really good at the moment".

"We've got options at full-back, so I'm not anxious about that", he explained.

James joined United from Swansea City on a five-year contract in June 2019 and played in 46 games in all competitions last season.

While he has endured a hard start to his second season at Old Trafford, he has featured in seven of Wales' eight games since September.

James made a blistering start to life in Manchester, scoring three goals in his first four Premier League appearances, impressing with his blistering pace in the final third and direct style of play.

It was a crucial victory for Wales, who have now secured promotion to the UEFA Nations League Group A.

"Having qualified it put us in a great position in this group to push on and see what we could do next. We're really looking forward to that".
