She says the district is still working on plans to get middle and high school students more time in the classroom.

The district began the 2020-2021 school year August 24 with all of its 16,800 students and teachers participating exclusively in remote learning.

Elementary school students will remain in full in-person instruction.

The district's plan was approved in a 4-3 vote at the October 13 meeting of the Board of Education, and will see early childhood and elementary school students and teachers return on November 9, and junior high and high school students and teachers going back on January 11, 2021. "We shifted to full in-person instruction in those schools a few weeks ago and now have no confirmed active student cases in our elementary buildings", the note said.

School officials say a total of four students have tested positive for COVID-19 in the district. The district changed its policy in September to require Pierre students at all grade levels to wear masks at all extra-curricular activities.

The school board will look at its instructional models again at its next board meeting on November 9.
