I urge the Government of the day to stop politicizing the pandemic for their own political interest, but instead battle the Coronavirus pandemic as the foremost national interest, with sensible, scientific and public health approach by making transparent the process for licensing and procuring any Coronavirus vaccines in the market.

Eighty volunteers aged between 18 and 55 will be monitored for three weeks to see if virus antibodies develop, the ministry said in a statement. If the vaccine works well and there are no significant side effects, it will then be approved for full use in the general population.

33 of the vaccines are still in early-stage Phase One testing, while 14 have progressed to expanded safety trials. In the second phase, scientists aim to complete vaccine safety precautions, determine the effective dosage, and further determine the vaccine's effectiveness, the statement said.

AstraZeneca's USA trial was paused since September 6 after the UK-based biopharma giant had announced that the phase 3 testing of its COVID-19 vaccine has been put on hold due to a suspected serious adverse reaction in a participant in the United Kingdom.

Should those succeed, a third, large-scale phase with 30,000 volunteers is scheduled for April/May.

There are no internationally approved vaccines yet, but several are in advanced trials, including from Pfizer Inc, Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca Plc and Moderna. "The commercial name of the vaccine is "BriLife".

"The second shot has to be given after 28 days, " added Kakani.

The vaccine developed by IIBR is based on an existing virus (VSV).

This vaccine was first tested on small animals - mice, hamsters and rabbits - before being tested on pigs.

The Defense Ministry said it would be able to produce roughly 15 million doses of the vaccine. Phase 3 clinical trials on various Coronavirus vaccines could be conducted accordingly in the red zones especially Sabah and Selangor, including vaccines offered by Chinese firms, Oxford team under Astra Zeneca and any other potential candidate vaccines at Phase 3 clinical trials. IIBR was established in 1952 as part of the Israel Defence Forces' Science Corps, and later became a civilian organisation.
