Public Health Ontario is reporting 72 new cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa on Thursday, the ninth straight day with less than 100 new cases in the capital.

There are now 270 people being treated for COVID-19 in Ontario hospitals. This is up from 3,905 a week ago, while 559 were in ventilation beds, up from 441.

Figures collected between March and June show 872 of 1,827 adults who were admitted to the hospital between March and June provided their ethnicity.

Minister for Equalities Kemi Badenoch made an oral statement in the House of Commons as she presented the first quarterly report to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Health Secretary Matt Hancock on progress to understand and tackle COVID- 19 disparities on ethnicity grounds.

"I wish to bring to the attention of all South Africans that our epidemiological reports are showing that in the country, over the last seven days there has been an increase of 9.1% in new cases".

Iran, the Middle Eastern country hardest hit by the coronavirus, extended restrictions and closures in the capital Teheran into a third week last Saturday as its death toll rose above 30,000.

"Failure to act quickly will lead to thousands of unnecessary deaths during this second wave - this is about public health as much as it's about racial justice", he said.

Asked for his view on current Government measures and what the trajectory looked like in terms of the number of cases, deaths and pressure on the NHS, he replied "quite gloomy".

"And... even if we stopped things now, cases and hospitalisations would continue to go up".
