Democrats have sought to tie Trump to the alleged plot against Whitmer, pointing to the president's tweet earlier this year to "LIBERATE MICHIGAN!" after Whitmer restricted personal movement and the economy in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

"You gotta get your governor to open up your state, okay?" It is risky, not just for me and my family, but for public servants everywhere who are doing their jobs and trying to protect their fellow Americans. Get your schools open.

Senior Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller told Fox News Sunday that Trump didn't regret the chant that broke out at the rally, saying the crowd was frustrated by Whitmer's restrictions for the state.

Trump, who is in the midst of a campaign push amid slumping national polls, held rallies in MI and Wisconsin on Saturday, where there has been a recent surge in coronavirus cases.

"I'm glad that President Trump's [Department of Justice] was able to get these psychopaths and put them away", Miller said, "but the fact of the matter is, people in MI want to get their state opened back up".

Trump responded, "Lock 'em all up". I see everything that is said about and to her online.

This month, 13 members of extremist groups were charged with plotting to kidnap the MI governor because of her measures to control the spread of the coronavirus.

Forty minutes later into Trump's Saturday night rally, the president again railed against Michigan's lockdown measures and sparked the crowd to resume the "lock her up" chants. "She blamed me", Trump said of Whitmer.

After slamming Trump campaign senior adviser Lara Trump on her "obviously unfounded, inappropriate" remark that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is experiencing a cognitive decline while appearing on CNN earlier Sunday morning, Coons said he also found her defense of the President encouraging "lock her up" chants against Whitmer to be "particularly troubling", given the alleged right-wing conspiracy that the Federal Bureau of Investigation foiled earlier this month.

"He wasn't doing anything, I don't think, to provoke people to threaten this woman at all". "Look, the president was at a rally".

Several Republican and Trump campaign officials appeared on Sunday news shows to defend the president. "The biggest antidote to his poison is the vote", she said.

"(Lara Trump's) comment was: "he was just having fun.
