Top Palestinian Official Erekat 'Critical' from Virus, Says Hospital

"To treat at our expense a declared hater of Israel is not a sign of excessive morality".

She pointed out that her Ministry was in contact with medics treating Erekat at the hospital to remain abreast of his health condition as she wished him a speedy and full recovery.

Michal Cotler-Wunsh, a member of Knesset for the Blue and White Party, tweeted, "The foundational principle of reciprocity demands: humanitarian for humanitarian!"

"Again the opportunity to make a demand is clear: Medical assistance in return for the return of Hadar, Oren, Avrah and Hissam, who are held in Gaza for more than six years, in a clear violation of global law and moral order", Cotler-Wunsh.

"Following his contraction of Covid-19, and due to the chronic health problems he faces in the respiratory system, Dr Erekat's condition now requires medical attention in a hospital", the PLO's Negotiations Affairs Department said in a statement.

Erekat, who lives in the biblical town of Jericho in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, underwent lung-transplant surgery in the United States in 2017.

Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital said Erekat was taken to their coronavirus intensive care unit at the request of officials in the Palestinian Authority.

In an op-ed in Al-Hayat Al-Jadida on March 30, Erekat accused Israelis of "spitting on Palestinian cars and property ‎in order to transfer the corona disease", and said that Israelis have a "wild desire to get rid of the ‎Palestinian people in any way".

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat - one of the most visible Palestinian leaders for decades - is now on a ventilator and placed into medically induced coma over his COVID infection.
