While Europe is experiencing a second wave of Covid-19 cases, the US, India and Brazil remain the three worst-hit nations, followed by Russian Federation and Argentina.

The number of recoveries have surged to 66,63,608 and the national recovery rate has improved to 88.26 percent.

Kerala now has 94,609 active cases. Enhanced countrywide medical infrastructure, implementation of the Centre's standard treatment protocol by states and union territories, and total dedication and commitment of doctors, paramedics and frontline workers have led to a persistent increase in the number of total recoveries with commensurate dip in the fatality rate, the ministry underscored.

The development comes as India's overall active cases dropped to under 8 lakh for the first time after 6 weeks on the back of robust recovery rate, early detection with high testing, and other containment strategies. It said the number of Covid-19-related deaths by August 2020 would have been over 25 lakhs if there had been no lockdown at all, and also that there would have been over 1.4 crore symptomatic infections by June 2020. "India is the only country with the highest recoveries and continues to have one of the lowest fatality rates globally". It can be as much as "up to 26 lakh cases a month", the committee said, adding that only 30 per cent of the population has developed immunity so far. "These have in tandem resulted in consistent slide in the active cases", the ministry highlighted.

Kerala, too, has been reporting between 6,000-10,000 cases a day over the past month. A total of 837 case fatalities have been reported in a span of 24 hours.

India now has 74.3 lakh cases with 1.1 lakh deaths - the lowest per million Covid deaths in the world, government data shows.

The 579 new fatalities include 150 from Maharashtra, 64 from West Bengal, 56 from Tamil Nadu, 51 from Karnataka, 39 from Chhattisgarh, 29 from Uttar Pradesh and 28 from Delhi. Maharashtra has contributed the highest number, with over 14,000 single-day recoveries.

The Centre will send a high-level team of health experts to five states including Kerala where COVID-19 transmission is breaking records, in order to guide them regarding controlling the pandemic.
