As per Variety, the premium cabler has ordered 10 episodes, with production set to begin in 2021 for a fall debut.

Even though certain fan-favorite characters such as Debra Morgan - played by Jennifer Carpenter - may be dead on the show, that doesn't mean they won't return. Hall will reprise his role as Dexter Morgan, the Miami Metro Police Department blood spatter analyst by day, green-shirted killer by night.

The hugely popular "Dexter" is set to return to U.S. cable network Showtime with a 10-episode revival it has been revealed.

Showtime's serial killer drama wrapped its eight-season run seven years ago by - SPOILERS ALERT, AND I AM NOT KIDDING - killing off this main character and then sending Michael C. Hall's titular vigilante into fake death-imposed exile in the middle of nowhere. Dexter's journey through the series, the confusion fans felt for rooting for a murderous, psychopathic antihero, and a handful of seriously shocking moments, made the show one of the most water-cooler worthy ones of that decade.

Showrunner Scott Buck defended the finale to Entertainment Weekly at the time: 'Even if i don't write an episode, I'm still in charge. We all work cohesively as a team.

What would happen do you think if a serial killer like dexter was a real person and present between us. It's a hard question to answer'. Certainly, the shakiness of certain aspects of the eighth season maybe made that ending less palatable to people. Sometimes I wish he'd offed himself, wish he'd died, wish Deb had shot him in that train compartment - of course, that would have made an eighth season hard to do'.

It's not yet known where the new series will pick up, but the original show ended after eight seasons with Dexter faking his death and living under a new name in OR after wrecking his boat and escaping from a hospital with the body of his sister, who had been shot and left in a coma, and having sent his son Harrison and love interest Hannah to live in Argentina.

Although specific plot details have been revealed for the upcoming limited series, perhaps Phillips will finally use the storyline to finally kill off the protagonist.
