Winning snaps from Wildlife Photographer of Year awards

Presented by Sergei Gorshkov, which won this year's Wildlife Photographer Competition.

Sergey Gorshkov was crowned overall victor of Wildlife Photographers of the Year with a shot of a Siberian tigress in a forests in Russia's far east.

The photograph was taken using a camera trap, which triggers when a tiger walks by.

The Siberian tiger, also known as the Amur tiger, is a subspecies of the big cat that can be found in the Russian Far East, northeastern China and potentially into North Korea.

He was rewarded with the prestigious prize on Tuesday, according to a press release from the Natural History Museum, which runs the competition.

Liana Heikinen won this year's Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year award with a picture taken during the holidays in Helsinki, Finland. This year, the competition received 49,000 entries from photographers from all over the world. "It's also a story told in glorious colour and texture of the comeback of the Amur tiger, a symbol of the Russian wilderness".

Chairwoman of the judging panel Rosamond Kidman Cox said of the overall winning image, The Embrace: "It's a scene like no other". The picture, titled The Embrace, shows the intimate moment in which the female tiger is seen embracing a tree, rubbing against the bark to leave her scent and mark territory. Once hunted for their exquisite fur, the tigers are now under threat of extinction. "The remarkable sight of the tigress immersed in her natural environment offers us hope, as recent reports suggest numbers are growing from dedicated conservation efforts", Littlewood added.

The virtual awards ceremony of the Natural History Museum's the 2020 Wildlife Photographer of the Year was held at London on Oct 13. The museum will let only a limited number of visitors following all safety guidelines during COVID-19 to ensure it is a "safe and welcoming experience" to view the photographs in a crowd-free gallery.
