Maguire has had a hard start to the season for both club and country and according to Southgate, the player will learn a lot from the setbacks and bounce back.

Maguire deserves some time away from the limelight and could do with a break.

Having come from behind to beat Belgium 2-1 at the weekend, Gareth Southgate's side immediately ceded top spot in Group A2 as Christian Eriksen scored the only goal with a 35th-minute penalty.

The off-season drama appears to have impacted the 27-year-old, whose poor United form translated onto the global scene on Wednesday when he was sent off for collecting two bookings in a wretched 31 minutes.

England manager Gareth Southgate leapt to the defence of Harry Maguire after the Manchester United defender was sent off 32 minutes into England's 1-0 defeat by Denmark in the Nations League at Wembley on Wednesday (Oct 14). There is a lot going on in his life and I think we sometimes forget that. 'Harry's a strong guy mentally, ' he said.

"Football's a game that can turn around quickly".

He may have minimal experience on the worldwide stage but Southgate has already promoted Coady to his leadership group - a select band of players within his squad who are the go-to men for a largely inexperienced squad. I'm not anxious about him. We've got another camp in a few weeks and we've just got to stick together.

'Jack is fine, Jack is a great lad and everyone in their career will have times when they are on the bench and out of the team - that is just something you go through so Jack won't require an arm round the shoulder I'm sure'.

On Sky Sports, Redknapp urged fans to look at the bigger picture as the Man Utd captain goes through a hard spell both on and off the field.

Full debutant Reece James was sent off for dissent after the full-time whistle.

"No, I don't want to elaborate on that".

"I can't criticise any of the players in terms of the way they played, I thought they were excellent".
