Earlier, former champion Jelena Ostapenko advanced to the third round when she beat second-seeded Karolina Pliskova 6-4, 6-2.

Ostapenko won his only Major title here in 2017.

Ostapenko converted her third match point when Pliskova, who had 25 unforced errors, sent a forehand long and she will next meet the victor of the clash between former US Open champion Sloane Stephens and Spaniard Paula Badosa. She has failed to make it past the third round of a Grand Slam since, bar a quarter-final and semi-final appearance at Wimbledon.

"I had to bring the best tennis that I could", added the world number 43.

Ostapenko stunned the sport three years ago with her run to the title in Paris, claiming a first career crown by seeing off the likes of Samantha Stosur, Caroline Wozniacki, and Simona Halep in the final where she overturned a 6-4, 3-0 deficit.

In 2020, she made the third round at the Australian Open and only second at the US Open but she arrived in Paris having retired from the Italian Open final against Halep with a thigh injury.

Pliskova's compatriot, seventh seed Petra Kvitova had a better day in her match against Italy's qualifier Jasmine Paolini.

Czech Pliskova, 28, was overwhelmed by the ferocious returns of her Latvian opponent, who had been knocked out in the first round the past two years.

No. 2-seeded Karolina Pliskova is out of Roland Garros and likely done for the season. His only defeat was his disqualification from the US Open.

Djokovic says I hope I can continue like this. "The world doesn't stop with winning only one Grand Slam".

Berankis lost his most recent clash with the Serb in NY at the uprooted Cincinnati event this year and managed only five games against Djokovic when they met at the 2013 US Open.

The 30-year-old will now play Slovenia's Polona Hercog or Canadian Leylah Fernandez.

However, Tsitsipas has won all three of their meetings, two of them on clay including on his way to the runners-up spot in Hamburg last week.

The 21-year-old Kenin will next face either Irina Bara or Alison Van Uytvanck.

Belarusian eighth seed Aryna Sabalenka defeated Russian Daria Kasatkina to reach the last 32 at Roland Garros for the very first time.

The unseeded Collins next faces 2016 champion and No. 11 seed Garbie Muguruza or Kristyna Pliskova.
