Netflix has released photos from The Crown Season 4 providing the first look at Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher and Emma Corrin as Princess Diana (via Deadline).

The Crown was initially set to run for five seasons, but the show's creators and Netflix decided that to tell the story properly a sixth and final season would need to be added.

Corrin's Diana is shown being photographed on a street as well as attending a glitzy event with Josh O'Connor's Prince Charles, while Anderson's Thatcher, who became the UK's first female Prime Minister in 1979, is shown waving outside of 10 Downing Street.

Thatcher and Queen Elizabeth's complicated relationship will be a focal point of the new season, Variety reports, as will the impact of Thatcher's hyper-conservative policies on British culture and the "brief but bitter" Falklands War in 1982. Although it is the fairy-tale that the British people needed at the time, behind closed doors, the Royal family is becoming increasingly divided.

Written by Peter Morgan, The Crown Season 4 also stars Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Tobias Menzies as The Duke of Edinburgh, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker Bowles and Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother.

Meanwhile, Pennyworth star Emma Corrin is depicting Princess Diana during her turbulent marriage to Prince Charles.

Netflix added: "So to summarise - we'll have one more season with Queen Olivia Colman, before she passes the crown to Imelda Staunton".

The pictures also offer fans a glimpse at Olivia Colman as she reprises her role of Queen Elizabeth II, having taken over from Claire Foy in the third season, as well as Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret. The series begins with an inside look at the early reign of the queen, who ascended the throne at age 25 after the death of her father, King George VI.
