Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has revealed its take on the returning Zombies mode - a new story set alongside existing Zombies canon, featuring cross-generation, cross-platform play, Battle Pass integration, and more.

In the new story, Requiem team is tasked with investigating an old World War II bunker, filled with "decades-old secrets".

The mode will also feature a rival Soviet sqaud called Omega Group that aims to study and harness the supernatural phenomena in the area. Sometimes the mode has loose ties with the themes present in the main campaign, but more often, Zombies has remained its own separate entity entirely, with unique characters, story, and locales.

Cross-progression: there's unified weapon progression across all Black Ops Cold War, meaning, "wherever you play across multiplayer zombies, your global rank and weapons level stays connected".

The team has not said how many post launch maps they plan to release for Zombies in Black Ops Cold War.

Once again, it'll interesting to see how Treyarch balances these new features, as having the ability to completely decimate a field of Zombies sounds like a ton of fun, but will absolutely require balancing so that it doesn't feel too easy. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will apparently follow the winning formula - as well as introduce the format's next evolution with a killer retro instalment. Among this cast, there is one particular contact - Sam - who seems eager to share intel discovered from deep within the KGB. Instead, you'll have to face a harder wave of Zombies while attempting to make your way to the helicopter that pulls you out. You'll have a lethal, tactical, and support slot, and aside from finding and crafting weapons, you can also combine them. It's now unknown how extensive this system will be, as starting with two major weapons with attachments and the works doesn't sound fair. It's supposed to "add another layer to squad-based tactics".

Classic Zombies Perks are back with a reimagined Cold War aesthetic, including the return of timeless favorites like Juggernog and Speed Cola. But now there's no longer a limit to how many perks can be consumed, so loadouts might get pretty insane.

A new option in the Zombies experience is Exfil.

"For the first time, post launch [Zombies] content is going to be free".

One of the bigger structural changes is that you won't have to start hunting undead hordes with a pistol this time - player progression in Zombies is hooked into the wider Black Ops Cold War multiplayer experience (including the Battle Pass), and you can bring your Gunsmith weaponry over "via loadout". Field Upgrades will provide buffs to players and you are now able to escape a map if you don't think you can survive in return for some rewards.
