"Continents are on fire". His two inaugural video posts have also reached a combined viewership of almost 13 million. "But we know what to do about it, and that's why I'm tackling this new way of communication".

As well as videos of the celebrated broadcaster, followers can expect to see exclusive clips from behind-the-scenes filming his new documentary, as well as posts in collaboration with The World Wildlife Fund for Nature.

He added: "Over the next few weeks, I will be recording messages to explain what the problems are and how we can deal with them".

Attenborough had not been hankering to join social media - a fact that's made quite clear in the caption of his first post (which isn't actually written by him, but by two colleagues who worked on A Life On Our Planet). "We know what to do, we just need the will".

He also holds the record for longest career as a TV presenter and longest career as a television naturalist, with a career spanning more than 60 years back to the formative years of television.

Attenborough's video has been watched more than eight million times.

First, the older folk came for Facebook, and there were likes and comments under every single picture, within minutes of anything being posted.

The noted television personality from the United Kingdom debuted on Instagram at 2 am PDT and his account reached one million followers in just over four hours later at 6:44 PDT.

On his account, a video was shared a video with fans that aimed to inspire a change. "The solutions already exist - David shares them in this film as part of his vision for the future - but it's now critical, for our own survival, that we embrace them". It seems Instagram's users are in concurrence, having helped Attenborough to break the record for being the fastest-ever to reach a million followers on the platform, according to Guinness World Records. "In case you're wondering, "we" are Jonnie and Colin and we worked with David on A Life On Our Planet", he further wrote. The film will premiere in cinemas on 28 September and launch on Netflix globally on October 4.
