Teenager Ansu Fati offered Barcelona a glimpse of what life may be like without Lionel Messi with a starring role in Sunday's 4-0 win against Villarreal.

Fati, 17, helped Barca put a tumultuous summer behind them with two goals as Ronald Koeman's side made the flawless start to the new La Liga season at Camp Nou.

With all the pre-match build-up centring on Messi's anger at the club's decision to force Luis Suarez out and join Atletico Madrid, Fati stole the show by giving Barca an early advantage with two expertly taken finishes in the opening 20 minutes. "It was not just my decision, but also the club's", he commented.

He continued, "I hope he keeps on enjoying it and that all the fuss around him doesn't have a negative impact on him because he has the quality to become one of the best".

Ansu, who doesn't turn 18 until October 31, has now scored 10 goals for Barca since making his senior debut last August. He revealed that the 17-year-old winger agreed to a contract extension with Barca, with his release clause now set at €400 million ($465 million).

"Nothing is to be excluded, but as I said I focus on the players who are here". "He's a good kid". Sometimes he lacks a bit of concentration.

Barcelona have previously been criticised for their reluctance to give the youngster generation a chance, but Fati is one of a select few to handed an opportunity. "He has left and I wish him a lot of luck", he said.

"I told him that perhaps he wouldn't play many minutes but that if he stayed I would still count on him".

"It's normal for me to be sad when a friend leaves the club. but the important thing is how he (Messi) is training and playing".

"It is always good to have another striker for having another plan", Koeman said.

"It makes sense because Barca need to develop players who can take responsibility on the pitch and make the difference in big games".

Barcelona's Lionel Messi celebrates with team mates after scoring his side's 3rd goal during the Spanish La Liga soccer match between FC Barcelona and Villareal FC at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona, Spain, Sunday, Sept. 27, 2020.
